Aim and Targets

The aim of the proposed project is to determine the differences, in terms of seismicity, along by the two different ages segments of the İzmir fault, which is the most important active fault passing through İzmir city center, by using soil gas; radon and CO2 anomalies. In accordance with this aim, the objectives to be achieved in the project are:

  • Determination of soil gas radon and CO2 concentrations along by the İzmir fault with in situ measurements,
  • Determination of the concentrations of gases (CH4, N2, O2) released from the mantle by gas chromatography (GC) in the laboratory environment by collecting the soil gas samples along by the İzmir fault,
  • Statistical evaluation of the obtained data,
  • Displaying the surface distribution of the obtained data on the İzmir fault by the geographic information system (GIS) by combining information such as the regional geology and topographic map,
  • Determination of the concentration anomalies of radon and other gases in soil air and the variation of the fault activity along by the fault.
